Historical Perspective

Darius Rucker would be smiling. For the first time since 1995 the Cougar Men’s Basketball Team beat Oregon at McArthur court. The last time the Cougars beat Oregon in Eugene, Hootie and the Blowfish were the world's top recording act, Clinton was in the Whitehouse, and the price of gas was just over a buck a gallon. How times have changed. Saturday’s victory was not only 13 years in the making, it also propelled the Cougars to a 20-5 record. The Cougars now have 20 victories in back-to-back seasons, the first time since the 1940-41 and 1941-42 seasons. Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” was the top song that year.

Congratulations to the Women’s Basketball Team. They notched their first league victory in over a year by topping Oregon State 56-52 on Friday. Juniors Ebonee Coates and Heather Molzen both posted double-doubles as the team won its first conference game in 30 tries. Head-coach June Daugherty praised her team’s effort and says the Cougars main goal is to continue to improve. They’ll have a chance to do that this weekend against the Arizona schools. Neither game will be televised.
